Do AI Overviews cite the pages that rank in the top 10?
36.3% of AI Overview citations went to a domain also ranking in the organic top 10, across 224 SaaS keywords with complete top-10 data.
78.6% of those 224 keywords had at least one domain in both the AI Overview and the top 10. In that subset, most citations (63.7%) still came from domains outside the top 10. Overlap doesn’t prove that ranking causes citations.

Do AI Overviews and AI chat engines cite the same sites?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude cited 1,213 distinct domains across 400 SaaS buyer answers. 409 of them also appeared in AI Overviews for the 453 SaaS keywords.
Community and UGC sources were 25.9% of AI Overview citations. In the four AI engines, they were only 0.2% to 3.9% of citations.
If you’re looking at generative engine optimization statistics, this gap is worth noticing. In this SaaS data, a single list of sources to target would likely miss some of what AI Overviews or the AI chat engines cite.

Do AI engines agree on which SaaS brands to recommend?
For 100 SaaS buyer prompts on October 12, three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini) named 5.4 distinct brands per prompt combined. Only 2.6 were named by all three.
Across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, the mean pairwise Jaccard similarity of named brands was 0.69.

Methodology and caveats
Study at a glance
| Study 1: Google AI Overviews | Study 2: AI chat engines | |
|---|---|---|
| Sample | 453 SaaS buyer-intent keywords | 100 buyer prompts x 4 engines = 400 answers |
| Dates | 112 searches October 12, 2026; 341 on October 13, 2026 | ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini October 12, 2026; Claude October 13, 2026 |
| Engines | Google desktop | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude |
| Location | US, English | US, English |
| Data source | DataForSEO SERP API | DataForSEO AI Optimization API |
Method
- Snapshot: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on October 12, 2026; Claude on October 13, 2026. Google: 112 searches fetched October 12, the other 341 on October 13.
- Location: US, English, Google desktop. One run per keyword and prompt.
- Study 1: 512 candidate SaaS keywords, 453 kept with search volume (DataForSEO Labs estimates).
- Study 2: 100 buyer prompts (20 SaaS categories x 5 intents: best, SMB, vs, pricing, alternatives) x 4 engines = 400 answers, collected through the model APIs, not the consumer apps.
- Data: DataForSEO SERP and AI Optimization APIs.
Caveats
- This is one snapshot with one run per keyword and prompt. AI answers vary between runs, and we didn’t measure that variance.
- Response size limits cut organic results short on 209 keywords, so top-10 overlap uses only the 224 keywords with complete data. One keyword was left out of citation metrics. SERP feature counts for the full set aren’t reported.
- Claude ran a day after the other engines, and the brand agreement figures cover three engines only.
- ChatGPT search was forced on; 20 unforced runs were discarded.
- Gemini citations come from its direct URL or annotation title, because its raw URLs are Google redirect links.
- A citation is a linked source returned with the AI Overview or answer. Per-engine overlap with AI Overviews is measured against the 1,045 domains cited in the full-set AI Overviews.
- Source types come from a rule-based classifier, and the “other blogs or vendors” bucket is large. Brand matches use a curated list; ambiguous names count only when capitalized.
- These figures describe SaaS buyer-intent keywords and prompts, not all searches or all SaaS.
