An SEO agency grows the traffic and leads your website gets from Google and AI search. It audits your site, fixes technical problems, publishes pages that match what buyers search for, earns links from other sites and reports on the leads that come in, so you can see what the work brings back.
The work comes down to seven jobs:
- An audit of your site’s technical health, content and authority
- Technical fixes, heavy in the first month and then ongoing
- New and improved pages and articles built around real searches
- Links and mentions from other sites
- Visibility in AI answers like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews
- Conversion fixes when traffic arrives without leads
- Reporting on leads and sales, with rankings and clicks as early signs
If you already have a website, most of that work happens on the site you have. I’ll walk through each job, what a month of work should include, what the first 90 days should show and what your team adds along the way.
What is an SEO agency?
An SEO agency is an outside team that specializes in organic search: getting your website found in Google and in AI answers like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews without paying for each click. A general digital marketing agency usually spreads across ads, social and email, while an SEO agency works on the site itself: its technical health, its content and its authority.
What does an SEO company do? It does the same work. SEO agency and SEO company are two names for the same kind of team, so everything here applies to both.
An SEO consultant or freelancer usually advises or handles one part of the job. An agency usually brings strategy, writing, technical work and link building under one plan. Some companies build that team in-house instead, and we compare both paths in SEO agency vs in-house.
At ClearBrand, our SEO agency runs that whole program for Google and AI search together.

What an SEO agency does for a website you already have
So what do SEO agencies do once the work begins? Most founders I talk to already have a site, and for most of them it isn’t bringing in many leads yet. The work starts with what’s there.
It starts with an audit
We start with a free SEO audit of your technical health, content and authority, and I think a good agency should offer one. The audit is also where the agency works out whether SEO is the right channel for you right now, so you don’t have to figure that out on your own. Your part is to read it and ask questions, and if SEO isn’t the right fit yet, a good audit says so.
In my experience, first audits often find a site in rougher shape than the founder expected. Slow pages, broken heading structure and other technical problems sit behind the scenes, and they can hold back the rest of the work. That’s normal, and it’s hard to see from the outside, so don’t be discouraged if your audit turns up a long list.
Technical fixes
Technical SEO is the work that helps Google and AI tools crawl, read and trust your pages: speed, headings, structured data, internal links and the errors that pile up over time. We fix a lot of it in the first month, then keep it current every month after.
Pages and articles that match what buyers search
Keyword research shows what your buyers type and ask. The agency turns that into new pages and articles, and improves the ones you already have with on-page SEO, from title tags and headings to the copy itself, so each page matches the search intent behind its query.
We handle all the writing. First we set the strategy, then we interview you so your opinions and ideas shape each piece, then we write, and someone qualified on your team reviews it before it goes live.
Links and mentions that build authority
Links from other sites, brand mentions and citations help Google and AI tools judge what your site is about and whether it’s worth trusting. An agency earns them steadily, a few each month.
Reporting on leads
Rankings and clicks are early signs that the work is moving. Leads and sales are what count. A good report shows the calls, form fills, demos and signups that came from search, with Google Search Console data alongside.

What is included in SEO services each month
A real SEO program ships a set amount of work every month, and you should be able to count it. Our base package breaks down like this:
| Work | What ships | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and articles | 8 new or improved pages or articles a month | More pages ranking for searches your buyers make |
| Technical SEO | Heavy fixes in month one, then monthly upkeep | Faster, cleaner pages that Google and AI tools can read |
| Links | 1 to 3 backlinks a month | Growing authority that helps more pages reach page one |
| AI search | Content and tracking for AI answers | A clear view of where your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews |
| Reporting | A dashboard tied to leads, with AI visibility tracking that updates on its own | Where traffic and leads are moving, month by month |
We guarantee increased traffic. Rankings shift as Google updates its algorithm, so we stand behind traffic, the result we can measure and move.
In my experience, a program that ships one article and one link a month rarely moves results, whatever it costs. We built our base package around the minimum amount of work that gets results.
You can see how we run it on our monthly SEO page. For how retainers are structured, read what an SEO retainer includes.

What to expect from an SEO agency in the first 90 days
For most companies with an existing site, I expect a timeline like this:
- Month 1: The audit, the strategy and the heavy technical fixes, with the first new pages going live.
- Months 2 and 3: Impressions and traffic should be climbing. Those are the leading indicators that the work is landing.
- If traffic grows but leads don’t: The next job is conversion. We look at the calls to action and the friction between a visitor and a sales call, demo or signup.
- Months 4 to 6: Leads, demos and sales generally follow when SEO is working. That’s the pattern we expect, and if revenue hasn’t moved by month 6, we check the conversion path together and find what’s in the way.
That conversion step matters more than most people expect. For Integrity Medicine, a direct primary care practice, traffic came in before leads did. We changed the calls to action sitewide to a free meet and greet with the doctor, and leads started coming in.
Sales usually aren’t the first thing to move in 90 days. Traffic usually is, and it’s the right thing to watch early.

How SEO agencies handle AI search
A good SEO agency handles AI search too, because ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews generally rest on the same foundations as classic SEO: helpful content, technical health and authority from links and mentions.
A few details change:
- Topic clusters. When someone asks an AI tool a question, it often runs a set of related searches behind the scenes. Google calls this query fan-out. Covering a topic from several angles raises the odds your pages get picked up.
- Comparison and best-of pages. We see these gain a lot of ground in AI answers.
- Tracking. ChatGPT has no Search Console, so we use Rankability to check what AI platforms show for the terms we track, on a regular schedule.
We’ve seen it pay off. Dunn & Stone Builders closes deals from buyers who found them through ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and they know because they ask every consultation how they found them. For more on the terms, see SEO vs AEO vs GEO, or how we work as a GEO agency.

What the results look like in real industries
Here’s what that work has done for three of our clients. Every site starts in a different place, so read these as examples rather than a forecast:
- KleerCard (fintech for churches and nonprofits): first rankings within a month, and now outranking multiple billion-dollar competitors. 50% of new customers come from search, at a 24:1 LTV:CAC.
- Integrity Medicine (direct primary care): 50% of new customers from search, and organic search is now their #1 marketing channel. Read the Integrity Medicine case study.
- Dunn & Stone Builders (custom homes): a $25M pipeline in a year at a 60:1 LTV:CAC. Half of all their leads come from search, and search leads close at a higher rate. Read the Dunn & Stone case study.
The work changes with the industry, so it helps to see it in yours: SaaS, fintech, healthcare or home builders.

What your team adds to the work
Results tend to be strongest when the agency and your team work as one. Your part is smaller than you might think, and it makes a real difference:
- Your expertise. A short interview before each piece puts your opinions and real examples into the content.
- A qualified reviewer. Someone on your team checks pages for accuracy before they go live.
- Room for more leads. When search starts working, your sales team or front desk needs time to answer the calls and forms.
- 3 to 6 months of runway. SEO pays back over months, so plan the budget to carry it comfortably.

What does an SEO agency do? FAQ
What does an SEO company do?
An SEO company grows the traffic and leads your website gets from Google and AI search. It audits the site, fixes technical problems, publishes pages that match what buyers search for, earns links and reports on leads.
What’s the difference between an SEO agency and an SEO consultant?
Both can be a great fit, and the difference is mostly scope. An SEO consultant usually advises on strategy or handles one part of the work, while an SEO agency runs the whole program: strategy, writing, technical fixes, links and reporting. Whichever you choose, look for results in your industry.
How much does an SEO agency cost?
The cost of an SEO agency follows how much work ships each month, so it’s worth comparing proposals by deliverables as well as price. ClearBrand sits in the mid-tier of SEO pricing, and our guide to SEO retainers explains how pricing is usually structured.
Can an SEO agency guarantee rankings?
No one can promise a specific ranking, and Google itself tells buyers to be wary of anyone who guarantees a #1 spot. Rankings shift as Google updates its algorithm. What an agency can stand behind is a result it can measure, like traffic growth, and we guarantee increased traffic for our clients.
When is an SEO agency worth hiring?
It depends on how your buyers look for you. An SEO agency is worth hiring when your buyers search for what you sell and you’d rather have a full team ship the work every month than build one yourself. If the free audit shows SEO isn’t the channel yet, you’ll know before you spend, and our guide on whether SEO is worth it covers the channel question in depth.
