If you built your Webflow site but haven’t connected Google Analytics yet, you’re making decisions without data. You don’t know where visitors are coming from, which pages are working, or where people drop off.

This guide walks you through the complete GA4 setup for Webflow, step by step.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A Google account (Gmail works fine)
  • Access to your Webflow site settings with publish permissions
  • A live Webflow site (or a .webflow.io staging URL for testing)

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics 4 Account

If you already have a GA4 property set up, skip to Step 2.

  1. Go to analytics.google.com and sign in
  2. Click Start measuring
  3. Enter an Account name (your company name works)
  4. Click Next, then fill in your Property name (your website name)
  5. Select your time zone and currency, then click Next
  6. Fill in your business details and click Create

Once your property is created, Google will prompt you to set up a data stream.

Step 2: Set Up a Web Data Stream and Get Your Measurement ID

  1. Select Web as your platform
  2. Enter your website URL and give the stream a name
  3. Click Create stream
  4. On the next screen, copy your Measurement ID. It starts with G- (example: G-XXXXXXXXXX)

Keep this ID handy. You’ll paste it into Webflow in the next step.

Note: Universal Analytics IDs started with UA- and are fully deprecated. Any tutorials referencing UA codes are outdated. GA4 is now the only option.

Step 3: Add Your Measurement ID to Webflow

This is the fastest method and requires no code.

  1. Log into your Webflow Dashboard
  2. Open your project and go to Site Settings
  3. Click the Integrations tab
  4. Scroll to the Google Analytics section
  5. Paste your G-XXXXXXXXXX Measurement ID into the field
  6. Click Save
  7. Publish your site to activate tracking

That’s it. Webflow only accepts Google Analytics 4 Measurement IDs, and you do not need a paid site or Workspace plan to use this integration.

Step 4: Verify That Tracking Is Working

  1. Open your live Webflow site in one browser tab
  2. Open Google Analytics in another tab
  3. Navigate to Reports → Realtime
  4. Browse a few pages on your site
  5. You should see yourself appear as an active user within a minute or two

If you see activity, you’re live. If not, double-check that your Measurement ID is correct and that you republished after saving.

Alternative Method: Using the Google Site Tools Webflow App

Webflow also offers an official app integration that connects GA4, Google Search Console, and Google Tag Manager in one place.

With the Google site tools for Webflow App, you can connect Google Analytics (GA4), Tag Manager, and Search Console to your site and view metrics like site traffic and most-visited pages right within Webflow.

To use it:

  1. Go to the Google site tools for Webflow App page in the Webflow Marketplace
  2. Click Add to site and select your project
  3. Follow the prompts to connect your Google account and select your GA4 property

Important: If you’ve previously connected the Google Analytics integration in your Site settings, remove that integration after connecting the Google site tools app to avoid inflating site load times. You don’t want to run duplicate tracking scripts.

Alternative Method: Using Google Tag Manager (For Advanced Tracking)

If you want to track custom events (button clicks, form submissions, scroll depth) the best approach is to route GA4 through Google Tag Manager (GTM).

If you are using Webflow, adding GA4 through Google Tag Manager allows for easier tracking management without modifying Webflow’s code whenever you need to make changes.

Here’s the short version:

  1. Create a GTM account at tagmanager.google.com and set up a Web container
  2. Copy the GTM container snippet and paste it into your Webflow Custom Code (head and body sections under Site Settings)
  3. In GTM, create a new Tag → select Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration
  4. Paste your GA4 Measurement ID
  5. Set the trigger to All Pages
  6. Click Save, then Submit and Publish in GTM

Google Tag Manager also lets you configure multiple tracking pixels including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google Ads from one interface, and filter staging traffic by excluding webflow.io domains from production analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding Google Analytics slow down my Webflow site?

No. GA4 injects a standard async Google Analytics tag, which loads just as fast as if you added it manually and does not meaningfully impact page speed.

Do I need a paid Webflow plan to add Google Analytics?

You do not need a paid site or Workspace plan to integrate Google Analytics into your site. However, you will need a paid site or Workspace plan to add any additional custom code.

Can I use Universal Analytics (UA) with Webflow?

No. Google deprecated Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023. Webflow only accepts Google Analytics 4 Measurement IDs. If you’re still on UA, you need to migrate.

How do I know if GA4 is already installed on my Webflow site?

If you currently have an ID that starts with “G-” in Site settings → Integrations tab → Google Analytics, you’re already using Google Analytics 4.

Does Webflow automatically track ecommerce events in GA4?

If you’ve enabled Webflow Ecommerce and set up the Google Analytics integration, Webflow sends ecommerce-related events, but you may need to configure GA4 (or GTM) to fully utilize ecommerce reporting. You’ll need to enable Ecommerce tracking in your GA4 settings to receive those events.

What’s the difference between adding GA4 through Site Settings vs. custom code?

The Site Settings method is the simplest and recommended approach for most users. To avoid duplicate tracking scripts, add your GA4 tag to only one place — either Site Settings or custom code, not both.
